This Rock Fort City was one of the most important hub around which the famous Carnatic wars were fought by British and French for supremacy in India. Apart from the Fort, there are number of Churches, Colleges and Missions dating back to the 1760s. Now the city is a booming Business centre in Tamil Nadu and is well-known for artificial diamonds, handloom cloth, cigars, metal utensils and wooden and clay toys. This city has given great Tamil scholars whose contributions to the Tamil literature have been very sizeable.

Tipu Sultan of Mysore

"It is far better to live for two days like a lion than for two hundred hears like a lamb." These valiant words came from the lips of Tipu Sultan, the famed martyr in the cause of freedom. His own life established the truth of this statement. He brawled like a lion against the British for safeguarding India's freedom and died like a lion on the battle field.
